Diamond Divas Roller Derby team laces up skates

The Bakersfield Diamond Divas, an all-women, flat-track Roller Derby team, has their first bout of the season Saturday night against Chino's Prison City.

The Diamond Divas may be pretty and resemble 1940s pin ups, but once they lace up their skates they're a rough and tumble group of roller destroyers.

The sport is real. Nothing is choreographed like the Roller Derby of the 1970s. Also, 20 percent of ticket proceeds go to charity.

Season Opener: Saturday, March 13th, 7 p.m.

Skateland, 415 Ming Ave. (near the fairgrounds)

Boy suffers burns in mobile home fire

A 5-year-old boy suffered burns to his legs, hands and face Thursday morning as his family's mobile home went up in flames.

The boy and his parents also suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to San Joaquin Community Hospital.

Bakersfield firefighters were called to the home on South Union Avenue about 7:45 a.m. and said they encountered flames as high as 30 feet. Crews said clutter in the home complicated the firefighting process.

The home is considered a total loss, and the American Red Cross has mobilized to help the family, whose names have been withheld.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
